Are you using a FRITZ! Box in your home or office? The WLAN signal does not always reach every corner of the house. Sometimes it’s useful to realign the router or move it to a new location. If that’s not enough, you should think about a repeater. You can find some repeater tests here in the blog. I am always asked which one to choose now.
Last year AVM revised its range of WLAN repeaters (they are also available in Switzerland from September 2019). In the article I show you the advantages of the four individual AVM models and describe which one suits me.
AVM WLAN Repeater – which one suits me
First of all, my recommendations here in this article are based on my experience with the products. If the budget is irrelevant and you want to be well equipped in the future, buy the 3000 * and you’re on the safe side. This gives you complete performance and flexibility. But most of all now you can leave the post here and focus on other things again.

Take a WLAN test
But before you start looking for a suitable repeater, test your apartment. Write down (or record) how your apartment looks and where you want good WiFi.
As soon as you have the hotspots, go to the respective points and use the FRITZ! WLAN to measure the WLAN. This gives you an overview of how good the WiFi coverage is.
With the information you know approximately what kind of service you actually need.
If during the test you come across areas that are barely or insufficiently equipped with WiFi, look for reasons. The two biggest enemies are certainly water and metal. If you notice that a wall is very strong against the WiFi signal, there may be a lot of metal (because it’s a carrier) built into it, or a sewer or fresh water supply. Even solid furniture or aquariums in the apartment can interfere with the distribution of the WLAN signal.
Also, you shouldn’t necessarily put the FRITZ! Box or the FRITZ! Repeater directly behind a cabinet. Here in the post I’ll show you what AVM has to offer for FRITZ! Repeater and what they are for.
Of course, you should still pay attention to the type of Internet line you have and the type of FRITZ! Box you have as a base.
For example, a FRITZ! Repeater 3000 behind a FRITZ! Mesh Set is certainly not ideal. At least from a performance standpoint, it doesn’t really make sense. But if you want to be flexible in positioning, this is exactly the choice.
But here I always say that we should also look to the future. If the purchase price is not too high, it is better to build a little higher, because the speeds that the providers offer you are increasing more and more and who knows, maybe there will be an upgrade for the router too.
Especially if, like us, you appreciate the flexible use of the FRITZ! Repeater 3000.
FRITZ! Repeater 600
The FRITZ! Repeater 600 is the smallest of the AVM range.
Its biggest advantage is that it is very compact in design and hardly goes beyond the socket plate. Furthermore, it is economical in terms of power consumption, which is two watts during normal web surfing. Furthermore, there is definitely also the low buying resistance in the portfolio at the time of purchase.
The most important note of the FRITZ! Repeater 600 is that it “only” extends WLAN into the 2.4 GHz range. Below you can read what the repeater is best for.
Also, you don’t have a LAN port to connect a gadget with an Ethernet cable. If you need it, you must at least use the FRITZ! Repeater 1200.

Its four built-in antennas transmit in the 2.4 GHz range. So it is more used to bridge distances in your home and to handle small amounts of web traffic.
This includes messaging, email, and occasional browsing through the browser of your choice.
Of course, it is also predestined for connecting smart home sensors to the indoor WLAN that are in hard-to-reach places. Because these still mainly transmit in the 2.4 GHz range.
That might not sound like much and is particularly interesting for anyone who has older Wi-Fi devices at home but doesn’t have enough range.
One option is certainly to extend the WLAN a little to their parents.

FRITZ! Repeater 1200
The FRITZ! Repeater 1200 is only considerably larger than the 600 model.
But this also has a LAN port (1 Gbit / s) at the bottom for connecting computers, game consoles or similar with cables.
In direct comparison with the 600 you will find more WiFi options here. That is, the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands are available. Both have two special streams.

Inside the FRITZ! Repeater 1200 also four antennas are installed. With the difference that two antennas transmit in the 2.4 GHz frequency range and two antennas in the 5 GHz frequency range.
This allows you to expand your mesh network quickly and easily. This is especially useful in smaller apartments or if the walls are built a little clumsily.
The 1200 series benefits from its compact design. It offers performance and yet does not attract much attention in everyday life.

FRITZ! Repeater 2400
With the FRITZ! Repeater 2400 goes further. From a physical point of view, it is therefore almost twice the size of 1200 *. This means it also needs a lot more space with a grip.
I stowed it with me in a Bluelounge Box in a power strip, so it doesn’t take up space in the socket. It can be done, it doesn’t have to be. Since the box is entirely made of plastic, it does not affect the WLAN performance in any way (and / or at most marginally).
AVM also supplied the 2400 series with two radio units. Similar to the 1200 model, there are two antennas in the 2.4 GHz range and two antennas in the 5 GHz frequency range. Each of these has four special streams.
You will also find a 1 Gbit / s LAN port here, directly below the repeater. You can also use your FRITZ! Repeater such as a WLAN or LAN bridge. But we’ll talk about it later.

This makes the two models a perfect match for the flagship FRITZ! Box 7590 (or a 6890 LTE) and similar models that also transmit with four series antennas. Thanks to the mesh system provided by FRITZ! OS, installation is also kept simple.
The repeater is also assigned the same SSID. For you as a user, this means that you only see one WLAN at home and can move around it without having to worry about which network and via which device you have access to the WLAN.

FRITZ! Repeater 3000
My absolute favorite in the home network is the FRITZ! Repeater 3000. This is suitable for anyone who has a lot of gadgets in the WLAN and needs a lot of performance. But also for someone like me who cannot / does not want to operate the repeater directly from the socket and would like to be flexible in the field of application with the long cable.
Its added advantage, the 3000 not only transmits with two units, but also has a third frequency band, which is only there to communicate with other AVM products. This is in the 5 GHz range. To access special streams as well here. Two of these are in each 2.4 GHz range and two each in the 5 GHz range. In addition there are four special streams in the second 5 GHz radio range.
In the backend of the FRITZ! Repeater under the menu item WLAN – Radio channel you will also find all three channels. The connection between your gadget and the 3000 is shown in green and the communication with your FRITZ! Box is shown in yellow.
You can also connect additional gadgets to the 3000 via LAN. This time also two in number and obviously it is a 1 Gbit / s connection.

THE FRITZ! The smaller repeaters mentioned above must always be placed directly on the socket. Or, as mentioned earlier, in a multiple socket. Neither is ideal, which is why I appreciate it so much that I am much more flexible with the 3000.
I’m no longer tied to the socket and the long cable gives me a lot more options.

I have the repeater and now?
As soon as you have decided and purchased a repeater, the setup begins. You don’t need a lot of text here.
The best thing to do is sit next to the router and see where the nearest power outlet is. Now plug in the repeater and wait for the LED on the front to stabilize a bit.
Now press the Connect button and go to your FRITZ! Box. Here you press the button labeled “Connect / WPS”. From that point on, the two gadgets start searching and connecting. All the magic then happens by itself and you have nothing to set.
The router has communicated to the repeater everything it needs to bring the home / office WLAN into the individual rooms. Future changes to the password or SSID (WLAN name) are also automatically transferred to the other repeaters.
So all you need to do is plug your repeater into the socket you identified earlier.
I have a little advice for you. If you want even more performance. You can also bridge the gap between the FRITZ! Box and the first repeater via an Ethernet cable (RJ45). So you have no WiFi leaks until the first repeater point and your WiFi has even more power. This is especially good advice if your apartment / house spans multiple floors.
Of course, this means that you also have to lay a cable and / or even drill it.

The great thing about AVM products are of course the constant updates from the manufacturer. Like the latest update to FRITZ! OS version 7.20, which is being rolled out to more and more products. So it basically doesn’t matter which model you choose.
