Huawei has invariably been a leader in smartphone photography for a few years. The evolution has been remarkable, to the point of wondering if we would have reached the pinnacle of technological innovation in smartphone cameras. The answer is no.
According to information from the AnTuTu Benchmark platform, the Huawei will have a commercially available liquid lens next year and the advantage of this liquid lens is that the focusing speed will be faster and can achieve the same focusing speed in milliseconds as the human eye.
IS Liquid lens we talked about in March, differs from a traditional zoom lens that adjusts the distance between two lenses with fixed focal lengths to achieve zoom. There are several types of liquid lenses and the one used in smartphones is the liquid dielectric lens, which uses liquid to focus light and changes the shape of the liquid through different voltages to control the image.
Huawei’s technical solution can be used to make this liquid lens available to meet the autofocus and optical stabilization performance requirements of the demanding market, to ensure motor reliability under abnormal operating conditions, such as impact and drop.
Huawei’s strength in photography will continue to grow after the launch of this lens and the DXOMARK ranking will once again be dominated by Huawei.
Huawei liquid lenses
The first liquid lens smartphone camera is already patented in National Intellectual Property Administration of China (CNIPA), as reported by Huawei Central. Huawei has patented a “liquid lens” system that can debut with the P50 and consists of a liquid-filled lens attached to a moving mechanism which moves in the direction of the “optical axis” when activated. Therefore, squeeze or pull the lens through a spring.

All of this, in turn, is connected to a limiter that keeps movement within a predefined distance. The overall goal is none other than adjust the curvature of the liquid and then the lens, for autofocus and optical image stabilization. A liquid lens, as the name suggests, is a malleable lens that it consists of liquid or encapsulated liquids. With a change in the electric field, the shape of the drop or drops can be changed, a process that will change the focal length in a few milliseconds, regardless of the distance.
The Huawei P50 series could debut with a liquid lens
In addition, the liquid lens is able to recover delay time and be faster in autofocus and depth detection. It can also provide better stabilization and this takes less space than a traditional lens. But Huawei’s patent shows the company has a different method, because, instead of relying on electric fields, this patent reveals that the liquid lens depends on moving parts to achieve a similar effect.
As always, this information must be seen as it is: a patent. Therefore, this liquid lens may never see the light of day or it may even come out with a completely different design. It is also not known when the Chinese company will choose to incorporate one of these liquid lenses into one of its smartphones, although rumors suggest it will be seen nthe future Huawei P50
