In relation to the new coronavirus, negative information is pouring out on us from all sides: we are seeing an increase in the number of infected people on a daily basis and we are closely monitoring how many patients have succumbed to COVID-19. One of them is a new study confirming the positive effect of using the active ingredient in the treatment of patients with COVID-19. It occurred during the first wave of the pandemic right in the epicenter of the disease, in the Italian region of Lombardy, most affected by SARS-CoV-2. It happened on patients who were at home after being discharged from the hospital prescribed erdosteine and was shown to have significantly improved quality of life parameters associated with health and shortness of breath.

Promises faster patient recovery
The study opens up new perspectives on the use of erdosteine in patients with COVID-19. This is most likely due to its multifactorial mechanism of action (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, double antibacterial and mucomodulator) and its ability to increase endogenous levels of glutathione, an important natural antioxidant. This could lead to block the spread of the virus in the lungs and for the subsequent faster recovery of treated patients.

MUDr. Miloš Jeseňák, PhD., From Martin University Hospital: “Erdostein is an interesting molecule that has so far found its application in the management of numerous acute and chronic respiratory diseases, both infectious and non-infectious. Given the complexity of the effects of this molecule, its use in the treatment and recovery of COVID-19 patients with respiratory symptoms can also be envisaged. We will certainly be awaiting further observations and clinical studies. “
This is the first study to record quality of life details in patients with COVID-19. Its full results have been published in the prestigious Multidisciplinary Respiratory Medicine journal.

Erdostein is an original molecule discovered and developed in Italy. It is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The great news is that, according to the available information, it could also be useful in the fight against COVID-19, especially in the supportive treatment of respiratory symptoms of this infection.
