The previous night, hundreds of people had already gathered in the Plaza de Mayo, in front of the emblematic Casa Rosada, in order to enter and sack the world champion, the day after his death from cardiac arrest.

In the obelisk of Buenos Aires and in the vicinity of the palace, fans from all teams, but especially Boca Juniors, gathered to honor the 10 with songs:

“The opening hours of the doors to the public will be from 6 am (local time),” a presidential statement reported.

The Argentine government has estimated that one million people will be there to see it. However, at the last minute it was decided to shorten the wake from three days to one, at the request of the family.

Around midnight, Maradona’s body left the morgue for a funeral home, from where he moved to Casa Rosada surrounded by a sturdy safety device and accompanied by some fans on motorcycles. Further, in every place he arrived, a crowd of broken-hearted but elated people awaited him.

Upon his arrival in the Plaza de Mayo, his coffin, red in color, could be seen briefly for the first time:

Claudia Villafañe, Maradona’s ex-wife, and her two daughters Dalma and Gianinna, arrived at the presidential office before midnight.

Despite the pandemic, many hope that the wake will be as massive as that of Evita Perón, in 1952, or Juan Domingo Perón, in 1974.
