Treating allergies reduces the risk of viral infection

The Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic has released table symptoms at the onset of the disease, in which he compares Covid-19, colds, flu and seasonal allergies. These results, based on expert analysis, indicate that common symptoms in allergies, such as itchy nose and eyes, watery eyes, red and swollen eyes or rhinitis, do not or rarely occur in other diseases. However, allergists say that treating allergies reduces the risk of infection with viral diseases.

Covid-19 most commonly manifests with fever, fatigue and cough. Often there are also pains in the muscles and joints, in the throat, in the head, but also loss of taste and smell. The latter symptom is one of the main distinctions against the flu or cold. Allergy differs from both diseases by rhinitis, nasal congestion, itching or swelling of the eyes. These are typical of allergies, while they are rare in the case of the flu or coronavirus.

“Allergy sufferers and patients with chronic allergic respiratory disease, based on the data published so far, do not have a significantly increased risk of severe Covid-19 disease compared to the general population,” said Professor Miloš Jeseňák of Martin University Hospital. adding that “the treatment of allergies but generally reduces the risk of respiratory tract infections, which often occur especially during autumn and winter”.

November is the end of the allergy season

In early November, there is a minimum of pollen particles in the air – allergens – that irritate allergy sufferers, so it’s a good time to get tested and start treating your allergy with allergen immunotherapy. . Although this treatment is commonly available, it is currently only used by 10% of patients in Slovakia.

“This is a treatment in which an allergic person is given a low-dose allergen to which he is allergic. The goal is to teach the body’s immune system not to respond to this allergen,” says Professor Miloš Jeseňák. Due to its ability to “train” the immune system to tolerate the allergen, allergen immunotherapy is the only causative treatment for allergies and the effect of the treatment is long-term.

In addition to healing, experts also talk about reducing the risk of developing new allergies and asthma. At the same time, the treatment reduces the chance of the airways being attacked by dangerous viruses that lurk for children and adults in this dry climate.

Allergenic immunotherapy treatment should last at least three years, all year round and regardless of the time of year. This will ensure persistent tolerance to allergens, reduce the need for symptomatic treatment and improve quality of life.

Allergen immunotherapy is also suitable for preschool children

Allergists say it is important to address allergy as a serious disease, treat it properly, not just suppress symptoms, and focus on further investment in modern, quality care.

“Allergen immunotherapy can be administered in the form of injections, tablets or drops. Today, however, we also have the most modern treatment in the form of fast dissolving tablets under the tongue, which is available for some allergens not only for adults. but also for children, where parents especially will appreciate the convenient administration at home, without the need for dose titration and refrigeration. Allergen immunotherapy is suitable for allergy sufferers aged five years, “says Professor Miloš Jeseňák .
