Warner Bros Pictures has confirmed that James Bond star Mads Mikkelsen will take on the role of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald from Johnny Depp in the third Fantastic Beasts movie.

Depp resigned from the role after losing his high-profile libel case against the Sun newspaper over an article that labeled him a “wife hitter.”

Danish actor Mikkelsen, 55, rose to fame as the shady banker Le Chiffre opposite Daniel Craig in the 2006 Bond film Casino Royale. He also played Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the television series Hannibal.

In the Harry Potter universe, Grindelwald is an immensely powerful evil wizard, considered second only to Voldemort.

Depp, 57, said he was asked to resign from the Warner Bros franchise following his legal defeat. He was refused permission to appeal the sentence, but was granted until 7 December to apply directly to the Court of Appeal.

The production of Fantastic Beasts 3 took place in the UK, with Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander and Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore. The film is scheduled for release on July 15, 2022.
