Thomas Gottschalk settles accounts with Markus Lanz: “Streber”
While he’s gotten a little quieter around him recently, he is Thomas Gottschalk is still a legend of German television. For almost 25 years it has hosted the ZDF show “Wetten, dass ..?” – until competitor Samuel Koch’s serious accident in 2011. Since then, Koch has been paraplegic and sits in a wheelchair.
In 2012, Gottschalk’s successor Markus Lanz took over the moderation. But he never managed to restore the show to its former glory. And Lanz’s predecessor probably never expected it, as he now reveals in the “Baywatch Berlin” podcast with Klaas Heuer-Umlauf. “It won’t work that way,” he thought immediately, said frankly.
Gottschalk is pleased to say that he had just been under treatment in Austria when the first episode with Markus Lanz as the presenter aired. The difference between him and 51-year-old Lanz was as follows:

And it also explains why that ultimately didn’t help the show, using a simple example. Gottschalk imagines a candidate arriving on the show and saying, “‘I can do a hundred push-ups!’ Then I’d say, ‘I can do one and it looks like shit, but I’ll do it now. ” It does not attest to Lanz’s capacity for self-irony. In Gottschalk’s imagination, he would have said in the same situation: “I’ll arrive at 89”.
Lanz’s biggest mistake, Gottschalk explains, was his ambition, he always wanted to be better than his candidates. He, Gottschalk, on the other hand, had a completely different approach:
He adds in a very clear and concrete way: “We can do without everything we do. It is nothing. The important thing is that people have fun.” By the way, Gottschalk was right with his first impression: “Wetten, dass ..?” was finally discontinued in 2014.
