FIFA 21 for PS5: This is the next generation update

If you wanted to play “FIFA 21” at the launch of the Playstation 5, you had to settle for the PS4 version and the current downward compatibility. There was no special new generation version. However, this will be released on December 4, 2020 – free for “FIFA 21” owners.

Two weeks before launch, we dared to delve into the PS5 update for “FIFA 21”. What’s in the next generation version and why is there even a small glimpse into the future of the “FIFA” series?

It is already certain that for the moment only console players on Playstation and Xbox will be able to enjoy the innovations. PC gamers have to get by with the “old” version.

Technology that excites?

Although EA Sports with the next-gen update on flags that don’t just want to change the graphics, the most important changes are happening in the graphics and presentation. Because obviously the player representation benefits from improved light and shadow effects or ray tracing. Also, “FIFA 21” runs on Playstation 5 at a resolution of 4K and 60 frames per second.

Finally, the first major innovation concerns the players’ hair. While in previous years this still reminded him of fur-covered swimming caps, “FIFA 21” now shows hair in locks on PS5, which allows for gradient coloring and animation when moving. Put simply this means: hair and beards look much more natural, which is especially noticeable in close-ups.

Technological update with compromises

Overall, EA Sports tries to incorporate even more details into the game so that the action feels more authentic. The keyword “muscle deformation” hides the animation of the muscle parts during the effort. For example, we see Paul Pogba shooting on goal and we clearly see how his thigh muscles contract and relax again. When a force is applied, the ball realistically deforms, remains at the shooter’s feet for a long time and returns to its natural shape only in flight.

Something is happening with the basic presentation too: Before the game, smaller intro videos put you in the mood for the upcoming game. In the presentation, for example, we observed how the audience entered the arena and commentators came up with some clever words to promote the match. In addition, there are now even more virtual fans in the stands and stadiums where smoking is allowed, now it is used.

The footballers themselves now receive smaller animations when not on the ball: leaders gesticulate or give passing paths, others blow their nose or blow dry their hair. If the stars have nothing to do, they also adopt a more “relaxed” posture than when the ball is close.

New camera perspective

One thing has to be clear here, however, EA Sports only works indirectly on the core game mechanics: player behavior and ball physics remain the same as in the version of “FIFA 21” which has already been released. However, obviously, some changes to the animation system affect the feel of the game. The “Response Multi-Touch Animation” allows, for example, the seamless acceptance of high balls with the chest before the players stop the skin with their feet and pass over them. The movements here appear extremely fluid and detailed.

Additionally, “Next-Gen-FIFA” offers a new camera perspective called “EA Sports Game-Cam”. This shows a little more of the playing field so that you have a better overview. Other aspects such as video evidence or even the fourth replacement in the extension are not taken into account in the update.

Direct feedback from Dualsense

The Dualsense controller offers game developers completely new possibilities to adapt their titles to the hardware. This is also the case with “FIFA 21”. Associate producer Sam Rivera explains during the presentation that the PS5 gamepad allows for a new kind of immersion. If you accept a ball during a football match, the controller will vibrate left or right, depending on which foot your footballer is using to stop the ball.

Additionally, Dualsense now acts as a tactile element to show the fitness of your proteges. The more tired your players are, the harder it is to press the shutter button with the help of the right trigger. As a result, you “suffer” with the efforts of your kickers and don’t have to look at the status display that often. Feedback effects are of course optional, but they could provide entirely new impressions.

Memory problems and lack of crossplay

Okay, but there are also some horseshoes with “FIFA 21” for Playstation 5. Technical and game adjustments prevent crossplay, as the programs for the old and new generation of consoles are just too different. Do you have a Playstation 5 and still want to play against PS4 friends? So you have to manually switch to the old version in the options.

Also, you can’t easily take your saved games with you. Server-based games like FIFA Ultimate Team continue without any difficulty. Other options, such as career mode, don’t offer these options. Here you have to start from the beginning or upgrade to the PS4 version.
