While studies show that the coronavirus was already in Europe in the fall of 2019, the outbreak didn’t hit until much later in the winter. Because? A study by researchers from Geneva and Zurich proposes the hypothesis of a link between pollution, atmospheric weather and viral spread: the air full of fine particles would be a boon for Covid.
Recently published in the journal Earth Systems and Environment, this interdisciplinary research was conducted by the institutes of environmental sciences and global health of the University of Geneva and Meteodat, a company born in the wake of the EPFZ. The study suggests that air pollution could be an explanatory factor for outbreaks.
