The first tests did not allow to clarify the origin of this disease that causes great anxiety in populations. Out of fear, many Senegalese have decided not to touch the fish anymore, while the national dish is famous Thiebou Dienn, it is made with rice and fish.
The authorities took the initiative very early to prevent the onset of psychosis. After a visit to the fishing villages affected by the disease, the Minister of Fisheries, Alioune Ndoye, wanted to reassure that the release of the fish is regulated to protect the consumer.
We confirm a prompt reaction from the Ministry of Health and all its teams and the professionalism of the doctors who immediately allowed them to be isolated and brought to treatment with convincing results because after two days some of them returned home. so that it is reassuring “, the minister immediately stressed.
He also specified that he spoke to reassure at the level of all that is said about whether to eat fish or not. The Minister of Fisheries has thus returned to the origin of the disease.
“The fish dumped on the market are first of all analyzed and certified as regards their nature of consumption. So we are reassuring from this point of view”, He said.
Insurance that does not seem to convince the Senegalese. Many of them have preferred to opt for caution.
For Khady Sow, a housewife, it is simply out of the question to go to the market or the beach to buy fish: “We will no longer go to the market and we will no longer take risks in this regard. Now we make the menu and change the meals because it is safer”, she specifies. “The beach is over until further notice“.
These fears aren’t limited to housewives.
Abdoulaye Camara is a sportsman used to the beach. He thinks it is more reasonable to avoid beaches and the sea for the time being. “It is a problem for me and I have completely stopped my beach business as it has a problem. A disease whose origin or infection is unknown, I don’t see why we risk going to the beach while we can do our business in sports halls and soccer fields “, he says.
The first results of the tests carried out on the Dakar-Popenguine maritime axis did not allow to resolve the ambiguities.
After analyzing samples of seawater, fishing gear and fish, the experts noted the presence of several chemical components. They suggested providing the results to toxicologists and directing research to the nets used by fishermen.
For the moment this disease, characterized by pustules and abscesses that invade the whole body, still retains all its mysteries.
