Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin took a break from his crypto activities and met his match – on the board against a Canadian national team player and well-known Twitch-based chess streamer.

In a much-discussed live stream confrontation against Alexandra Botez, a International chess federation– FIDE recognized female master and five-time Canadian national champion. Buterin put on a brave show in a 10-minute timed match per person on the Chess.com platform.

They were all smiles for both players, with no shortage of friendly chat. But Botez, playing black, easily had the measure of his architect opponent ETH, checkmate with more than a free minute and three main pieces (second row) left on the board.

Buterin’s supporters had hoped for a turnaround against Botez, with some even backing their man on online crypto betting forums. But the Twitch stardom made his opponent’s job easy and even took the time to explain to him where he went wrong in their encounter, with the stream ultimately turning into something of a chess lesson for Ethereum’s mind. .

Baptize initially challenged Buterin on Twitter on November 14.

Buterin is an avid amateur chess player and said he has a rating of 1,500 on the open source server Lichess. He said during the stream that he learned to play chess predominantly from his grandfather during visits to Russia as a boy.

Botez said he had a number of cryptographic connections, mostly through his network of friends.

Some members of the crypto community said that the confrontation had aroused strong emotions.
