First successful jailbreak for Apple’s smart Siri speaker

[ad_1]

Is there no time now?

The developers of the Checkra1n jailbreak tool cracked Apple’s Homepod speaker for the first time. This could replace Siri in the future with Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa.

The first Homepod jailbreak still doesn’t apply to the smaller version of the Siri speaker, the Homepod Mini, which was introduced just a few weeks ago. But the first version of the Cupertino smart speaker has now been cracked, as 9to5Mac writes. The exploit is available with the new version of the Checkra1n jailbreak tool. Also new in Checkra1n 0.12.1 Beta is support for iBridge SSH from the same host and an alert showing that Checkra1n’s security mode is active.

Before Homepod jailbreak

Jailbreaks for iPhones and iPads are known, there is still no jailbreak for a homepod that works with a tvOS-based operating system. With an almost unlocked Apple device, the software restrictions imposed by the manufacturer must be removed. This allows you to modify the system. But then, for example, applications that are not listed in the official app store can also be installed.

What Homepod users can do now with an unlocked Homepod is still unclear. According to 9to5Mac, it would be possible that Apple’s voice assistant Siri will be replaced by competitors, such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant. This could improve the performance of the Homepod, as smart competitors are considered to be better than Siri. It is also conceivable to open the Bluetooth connection or the music services available on the Homepod.

Race between Apple and jailbreaker

However, it is also possible that Apple will be able to quickly close the security gap required for jailbreaking. Community efforts to develop useful applications would then have been in vain. The “honor” for drilling the Homepod apparently goes to a developer who appears on Twitter under the alias _L1ngL1ng_.
