A Sony plans to keep the PlayStation 5 active for between five and seven years – which has been the average lifespan of a console generation over the past few decades – but understands that streaming gaming technology could become the standard in the future.
In an interview with GQ Magazine, CEO of Sony’s Interactive Entertainment division, Jim Ryan, responded to the uncertainties about the end of the traditional generation model predicted by some and reiterated that, at least in this generation just started, the current PlayStation must complete its full cycle.
“It seems like I’ve spent most of my time in the PlayStation division listening to people telling me this generation will be the last because something will make the console model redundant.” commented. “I’m sure these people are very wise and intelligent, but so far this hasn’t proved correct.”
“Since we’re taking PS5 very seriously, I’m very optimistic about what the future holds for the next five, six, seven years and… after that, who knows what’s going to happen? I think the cloud is likely to become more important in the next few years, even if there are challenges with regards to business models and technology. Until this happens, we will continue our studies and investments by examining them very carefully ”.
Both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 had 7-year cycles before being replaced by a successor. The PlayStation 5 was launched worldwide on November 19, 2020.
