- Daniil Medvedev is crowned champion in the ATP finals. The Russian defeats Austrian Dominic Thiem (ATP 3) in 3 sets with 4: 6, 7: 6 (7: 2) and 6: 4.
- The world number 4 wins his first title in London with only the second participation and celebrates the biggest success of his career.
- After 2019, Thiem lost again in the final in 3 sets.
It was already clear in advance that London would crown a new final winner. After 2:42 hours in an exciting final you also knew who. Daniil Medwedew prevailed against his Austrian opponent Dominic Thiem in 3 sets in the final tournament in the English capital.
Medvedev thus crowned an impressive week in London. With Novak Djokovic (group stage), Rafael Nadal (semifinal) and now Thiem, he subsequently won against world numbers 1, 2 and 3. In addition, there were victories against Alexander Zverev (ATP 7) and Diego Schwartzman (ATP 9).
Once again starting difficulties
As in the semifinals, the Russian also showed difficulties at the start against Thiem. In the first set he was able to use his only break chance when the score was 2: 2. Medvedev was about to put the Austrian in trouble with a score of 4: 5, but he had incredible bad luck with Thiem. So he was on the trigger and rushed to the net, but was slowed down by a Thiem’s net scooter. The Russian then took it all with a lot of humor.
Up and down in the 2nd movement
Also in the second round the two had balanced exchanges, at times high and they did not have opportunities for pause for a long time. Then this changed:
- Medvedev suddenly seems uncertain about his serve with scores of 2: 2 and 3: 3. But as Thiem also makes hair-raising mistakes, the Russian rejects 3 break opportunities.
- Then suddenly it’s Thiem, whose actually safe serve begins to falter. He also has to defend himself from a break chance, but is saved on his debut and once again stabilizes at 5: 5.
- In the tiebreak of the 2nd set, Thiem takes the lead with a mini break, but Medvedev gets the next 7 consecutive points and thus forces a 3rd set.
Medvedev’s first break after over 2 hours
Thiem’s serve also didn’t seem to be decided at the start of the deciding set: Medvedev had 3 break chances in 1: 1 and 2: 2 – and could only use the last one for his first break.
Thiem subsequently proved safe in his serve games and remained so on the Russian’s neck. But Medvedev made it to his first match point after 162 minutes and the coronation couldn’t be lost.
Thiems Deja vu
Meanwhile, having triumphed at the US Open, the Austrian missed his second major title in this tennis year, which was marked by many tournament cancellations related to the crown. Last year Thiem was in the final of the prestigious London tournament and was also defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas in just three sets. He only lost the deciding set at the tie-break.
By the way, Medvedev was allowed to be immortalized as the last ever London winner. The tournament will move to Turin next year.
