The amount of cryptocurrency and blockchain-related hacks declined over the course of 2020, a new report says.
According to data analyzed by VPN provider Atlas VPN, the number of hacks in the first half of 2020 decreased more than three times compared to the same period in 2019. The data is part of a report published by Atlas VPN on October 28.
According to Atlas VPN, 2019 was a record year for blockchain hackers who exploited 94 successful attacks in the first half of the year, up from 31 in the first half of 2020.
For the 2019 report as a whole it saw 133 successful attacks on blockchain networks.
Using historical data, Atlas VPN analysts have suggested blockchain hacks will remain on the decline, stating:
“Since 2020 isn’t over, we can expect more blockchain-related breaches to occur before the end of the year. However, based on historical data, it looks like 2020 won’t hit last year’s record highs and hacks of blockchain will remain in decline “.
According to the report, hackers have stolen $ 13.6 billion through 330 blockchain-related hacks since 2009. Atlas VPN found that attacks targeting decentralized apps based on EOS, or DApps, were the most successful in terms of the number of breaches. The EOS DApps are followed by cryptocurrency exchanges, blockchain wallets, and Ethereum’s blockchain-based DApps, the report notes.
As previously reported, the total volume of cryptocurrency-related fraud and theft resulted in losses of $ 4.4 billion in 2019. By comparison, hackers would steal around $ 1.7 billion through cryptocurrency thefts and scams in 2018. .
