CARTHAGE – The Moore County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to be careful about a scam via email that is new to the area.

E-mails are sent to people who say spy software has been installed on their computers, a sheriff's office statement said.

The scammer claims to have recorded videos of victims looking at pornography and promises to keep confidential information for a payment of a $ 3,600 coin.

The scammer says that once the money is received, the video will be deleted "allowing the victim to go on with his life as if nothing like this had ever happened",

It is believed that the scammer has created a program to get passwords and usernames from a data breach in a popular website that has not been identified.

Two Moore County residents reported receiving these e-mails [19659005] If an e-mail sim is displayed in a mailbox, delete it, release it, and consider changing the passwords.
