At the start of the “Grande Prémio MEO de Portugal” there was a 70-minute FP1 for the stars of MotoGP. Stefan Bradl has been involved for a long time. In the end there was a best time for Tech3-KTM rider Miguel Oliveira.
Exceptionally, the MotoGP stars will have 70 minutes twice on Friday in Portimão to come to terms with the “Autódromo Internacional do Algarve”, which for the first time has found a place on the calendar of the motorcycle world championship.
There was a test in early October, but regular riders were only allowed to race on Superbike bikes – with the exception of the “team in concession”: only the official Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaró, his teammate Lorenzo Savadori and the rider HRC Stefan Bradl had already been in MotoGP Cars driven in Portimão.
Therefore, the eldest of the Espargaró brothers was not a fan of the additional training time, as he made clear in advance: “I don’t like this new program at all. The rules allowed us to try here a month ago, which gave us some advantages. But with the additional “track time” Dorna has given everyone, this advantage will disappear. I think everyone will be more or less even by evening. I’m not happy with it, but obviously I accept it “.
About the route data: The circuit, also known as a “roller coaster” because of the climbs and descents, is 4,592 km long and is dotted with 15 curves, nine right curves, six left curves. The home straight is 969 meters long and 18 meters wide. The rest of the route is 14 meters wide. The maximum grade is 6.2 percent, the maximum grade is 12 percent. The curves are high between 2 and 8 percent.
After just under ten minutes, factory Suzuki rider Alex Rins was in first place in 1: 41.991 minutes, but on the next lap he was replaced by local hero Miguel Oliveira on Tech3-KTM: he set a first time in 1: 41,703 minutes.
For comparison: Aleix Espargaró drove a 1: 40.170 min on his RS-GP on 7 October. The all-time World Superbike record dates back to 2019: Jonathan Rea achieved a 1: 40.372 min in Superpole.
After 15 minutes, Ducati rider Jack Miller took the lead in 1: 41.584 minutes. After 20 minutes he was 0.119 seconds ahead of Oliveira. Followed by Viñales (+ 0.119), Nakagami (+ 0.191), Alex Márquez (+ 0.226), Morbidelli (+ 0.399), Rins (+ 0.407) and Aleix Espargaró (+ 0.479). Bradl in 11th place (+ 0.871).
Five minutes later, Yamaha factory rider Viñales set a new best time of 1: 41.427 minutes. Shortly after the 70-minute break, Oliveira regained the lead with a 1: 41.258 min.
As the route was relatively unknown and had recently been paved, there were four different front and rear tires to choose from. In the first phase, most of the riders were on the soft front and asymmetrical hard on the rear. Due to the extended training sessions, there were also up to twelve front tires (instead of a maximum of ten) and 14 rear tires (instead of twelve) per rider.
With 27 minutes left, Bradl set a new best time: 1: 41.235 minutes. By the way: Repsol Honda team manager Alberto Puig praised the German’s work in the 2020 season and confirmed in the season finale in Portimão that HRC will continue with him as a test driver in 2021.
When the clock was still 22 minutes, Fabio Quartararo was the first of the day to stay under 1:41 in 1: 40.877 minutes. Bradl followed suit (+ 0.043 sec).
More and more riders were also looking into the combination of medium-medium tires, not all drivers were planning a time attack. Ducati factory rider Andrea Dovizioso improved to third place just four minutes from the end.
On the following lap Viñales set a new best time of 1: 40.162 minutes (on front and rear averages). Oliveira briefly took second place, but was immediately ousted by Aleix Espargaró. In the last minute Savadori surprised when he jumped to second place (+ 0.135 sec) with a soft rear tire. However, his teammate Aprilia replied.
Tech3-KTM-Ace Miguel Oliveira grabbed the finish line, even on medium-medium, with a 1: 40.122 min the best time at the start of his first home GP since 2012.
