The PlayStation 5 is here! Consumers need to know now

On November 10, Microsoft released the new Xbox Series X and smaller Xbox Series S, announcing the next generation of consoles. Sony is now following suit with the PlayStation 5. While the console has been on the market in North America, Japan and Australia since November 12, the rest of the world will officially appear on November 19. At least on paper, because not everyone who wants to buy a PS5 will have the opportunity to do so for the moment.

Price, availability and differences

The PS5 is basically available in two different models: one with drive and one without. The driveless “Digital Edition” is available in Europe for 399.99 euros, the version with Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for 499.99 euros. Consumers can save € 100 on their purchase, but there is also no option to play on conventional discs with the “Digital Edition”. The title can only be downloaded from the PlayStation Store or via PlayStation Plus or PlayStation Now.

There are no performance differences between the console variants. Except for the unit, they are identical. The devices therefore differ only slightly in terms of design and size. While the PS5 with drive is around 390mm x 104mm x 260mm and weighs around 4.5 kilograms, the “Digital Edition” measures 390mm x 92mm x 260mm at around 3.9 kilograms. Both models can be installed both vertically and horizontally. The console is only available in white when it launches, but other color variations may appear later.

Unfortunately, not everyone who wishes will have a PS5 in their hands on launch day. Resellers have already informed pre-orderers in advance that it is uncertain whether every customer will receive a console on November 19. Sony also announced that there will be no consoles in stores at launch, only online. Those who have not yet ordered a PS5 must therefore hope that the devices can be ordered again as soon as possible from retailers such as Amazon, Otto, Expert or Saturn. However, especially in the beginning, the quotas are likely to be used up quickly.

Regardless of the edition, the PS5 comes with the console, a DualSense wireless controller, a USB charging cable for the controller, an HDMI cable, a power cable, a cradle, as well as a quick start guide and safety manual. The free game “Astro’s Playroom” is also pre-installed on the devices. Additional games or a second controller must be purchased as usual. Sony clarifies many questions users may have about hardware in the official “PlayStation Blog”.

These games are available at launch

If you’ve been lucky enough to get hold of a console, you’ll also be offered a wide selection of new and revised games. These include the action adventure “Bugsnax”, a new edition of the cult RPG “Demon’s Souls”, the slasher “Godfall”, the action comic “Marvel’s Spider Man: Miles Morales”, the platformer “Sackboy: A Big Adventure “, the Viking epic” Assassin’s Creed Valhalla “, the shooter” Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War “, the rally driver” Dirt 5 “, the basketball simulation” NBA 2K21 “and many more titles such as “Watch Dogs Legion”, “Borderlands 3” or “Fortnite”.

The PlayStation 5 also has extensive backward compatibility. Even if you don’t want to buy a new game at first, you can tap into over 99 percent of the more than 4,000 PS4 games available, according to Sony. The “PlayStation Plus Collection” also allows users with a “PS Plus” subscription to access 20 blockbusters for PS4 at no additional cost, including “Bloodborne”, “Days Gone”, “Monster Hunter: World”, “God of War “and” Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End “.
