This graphic, published by Apple, inspires and irritates many hardware specialists. What’s true about the value proposition for the M1 chip? graphics: apple

Technological revolution or marketing advertising campaign? The first expert reviews on the Apple M1 are here

Rarely have you heard so much praise from experts as for the new processor Apple has developed for its Mac computers. If you want to get to grips with the “M1” in depth, there is really good “food” here.

The first Apple devices with the new M1 chip will hit stores on Friday. The first pre-ordered devices have been delivered since the beginning of the week. In addition, Apple’s marketing machine also runs at full speed. Before official sales begin, the test devices are distributed to high-level tech journalists and influential bloggers.

Before we get to the reviews of well-known US tech portals and gadget-savvy reviewers, we should talk about the technical background of the M1.

It seems that many people don’t know how radical Apple’s move to its Mac chips is and what it means for the personal computers of the future.

One online commenter rightly said:

“Unfortunately, Generation Internet does not understand at all what is happening and what is being done here. People only complain about the colors of the housing, the same design, the resolution of the webcams and the 1mm lower display frame. This development is very sad. In my opinion, we are seeing a similar event here as in 2007 with the launch of the iPhone. This will change everything “.

The rating comes from a YouTube channel, which I can highly recommend to anyone interested.

Why is the Apple M1 “revolutionary”?

Forget short YouTube videos that try to divert attention from the depths of the content with quick editing. If you want to really immerse yourself in the subject, I recommend the «Lectures» available online at Jörn Dyck, the independent Mac expert and the leading mind behind web TV mac-tv.de. Dyck explains in understandable German and with clear examples why the Apple M1 represents a computer revolution. And don’t worry: laymen are worth looking at too.

Do all new Macs have the same new M1 chip?

Yes but…

There is no active ventilation built into the Macbook Air. The heat generated during the calculation must be dissipated through the components and the housing. In the event of a lot of heat, when the internal sensors of the computer measure that a maximum temperature has been exceeded, the performance is automatically reduced. The Macbook Pro and Mac Mini, on the other hand, have a built-in fan for air circulation. As a result, the device shouldn’t overheat that quickly and can be used longer at maximum power.

The following applies to all new devices: The working memory (RAM) of the Apple M1 is located directly in a so-called System-in-Package integrated. This is also known as “Unified Memory” and means that the main memory cannot be expanded later. But this new chip design is much more efficient. As a user, you need to think about what the Mac should be used for before purchasing – if you are planning video editing and other computer-intensive jobs, you should choose 16 gigabytes (GB) instead of 8 GB for the configuration of the RAM. The manufacturer offers only these two variants.

This finally brings us to the reviews of the first generation of Apple M1-powered devices.

How good is the new Macbook Pro?

Tech Crunch editor-in-chief Matthew Panzarino tested the most expensive of the three new models with an M1 chip, the Macbook Pro.

And t3n.de writes:

“We’ve rarely seen such a leap in performance and energy efficiency with a new laptop and our first impressions suggest that Apple’s promise when it announced the M1 chip and Macs based on it wasn’t too big.”

The editor-in-chief of The Verge, currently the most influential US tech portal, also tested the Macbook Pro with a 13.3-inch display. His verdict is:

In his review, the seasoned gadget tester and tech journalist specifically talks about “resistance”:

“Apple boldly claimed to improve M1 battery life – up to twice as many as Intel models – and while I haven’t seen it, I easily got 10 hours on one charge and had to go all out The battery can be drained in eight hours. “

In addition to the performance of the main computer (CPU), the US trade magazine Macworld also focuses on graphics performance:

“Apple’s integrated graphics technology is as impressive as its CPU. We are used to seeing how fast it is in an iPhone or iPad, but the requirements of operating systems with Windows like MacOS and the apps that run on them are often much higher. “

How good is the new Macbook Air?

Technical journalist Brian Heater, a hardware specialist from well-known US tech blog The Verge, tackled the Macbook Air. He writes:

How good is the new Mac Mini?

Tech Crunch reporter Matt Burns tested the third new Mac computer with the Apple chip. He writes that Apple’s M1 chip shines in the Mac Mini “as a stable workhorse” offering a new experience for Mac desktops.

And Chris Welch of The Verge states:

“Outperforms most Intel Macs in multiple benchmarks, runs applications reliably, and delivers a great everyday experience, whether you use it for web browsing and emailing, or for creative editing and professional work. This potential will only grow if Apple inevitably raises the RAM roof and (hopefully) reintroduces the missing USB ports … “

What’s wrong with the new Macbooks?

The most important thing in any computer is the software. Even the best hardware is useless without good software.

According to t3n.de, there are three types of applications (apps):

  • “TO Universal apps is software specially developed for macOS. The specimens we tested were extremely fast. So far, Apple’s apps have mostly been optimized on their own, but software from third-party developers like Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer already works flawlessly. “
  • “Most of the apps available to date are Intel-based, you can count on Rosette 2 and are thus emulated. We had no problems with software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Zoom or Skype. Everything worked flawlessly and absolutely smoothly. “
  • After all, now you can do a lot of them App for iPad and iPhone on Mac use: Here, too, all the apps we tested ran without errors.

The first positive: the programs that Apple has already optimized for the M1 chip, such as Safari, work ultra-fast and, above all, considerably faster than before: this is demonstrated, for example, by the well-known YouTuber Marques Brownlee (13 million followers) in his review. And resource-hungry programs that weren’t optimized for the M1 yet ran faster or faster. The “Wall Street Journal” pre-buttoned the Chrome browser and ran 50 tabs open at the same time. No problem! This is thanks to the Rosetta 2 translation software (integrated into the new macOS Big Sur operating system).

As is known, the apps for iPhone and iPad can now be used directly on Mac (without Rosetta 2): here the single US testers are disappointed by the previous presentations and above all by the usability and ease of use.

The testers also criticize the front camera, which is integrated into the frame of the case for video chats.

“Apple has missed a good opportunity to make real improvements to the MacBook Air beyond the processor. The old 720p webcam is a laptop crime, although the M1 chip does a better job of cleaning up the image output. “

Jason Cross, Macworld

There is also potential for improving display performance; HDR, a variable refresh rate or a high refresh rate would be desirable. And missing Face ID, Apple’s facial recognition should have reached the Mac a year or two ago, says “Macworld”.

And t3n.de reminds you:

“Apple may have overturned everything inside the new Pro, but externally nothing has changed from its predecessor. This doesn’t worry us much personally, but before the devices were announced, many interested users had requested a new design. “

What are the best video reviews for the Apple M1?

And Watson?

Digital publisher Daniel Schurter receives a test device from Apple and will publish a review “soon”.

And now you!

“The railway staff are fed up”: the lack of staff on SBB trains has consequences

With more than 100 full-time positions missing from customer service staff, they have to work more and more alone. It’s a safety issue, they warn. SBB weighs it down.

How can a single SBB employee take care of all the passengers on a 400-meter long train consisting of two separate compositions? This question is being asked more and more often by train travel companions. Because due to the lack of staff they have to do their jobs more and more alone, they accuse SBB.

With the reorganization program “Customer Support 2020” implemented in 2018, SBB not only hails the professional title of “Train Director”, …
