Johnson & Johnson is embarking on a new, advanced, third phase of testing its experimental coronavirus vaccine in the UK, using two doses instead of one to determine if it better protects people from infection.
Most coronavirus vaccines in the final stages of clinical trials require two doses for complete protection, including the leading vaccines developed by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Novavax.
Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the company that develops the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, used a single dose in the third phase of the trial in the US and Britain, CNN reports.
“Now they realize that two doses give you slightly better immunity“Kate Bingham, a biotechnology expert who heads the UK vaccine working group, told reporters.
Where the tests will be performed
Up to 30,000 people will be included in the new global survey, and volunteers reside in Belgium, Colombia, France, Germany, the Philippines, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, the company said in a statement.
“To evaluate the efficacy of the “Janssen Covid-19” vaccine, clinical trial sites in countries and areas with a high frequency of Covid-19 and the ability to start quickly were selected.“
Two doses
Volunteers will receive two injections 57 days apart or a placebo. The first volunteer was to be vaccinated in Britain on Monday.
