Shortly after the deaths of prominent personalities, the media often publish detailed obituaries, or evaluations of the person. It is common practice to prepare obituaries to be able to quickly inform readers after the death of a personality. It becomes inconvenient, however, if these lyrics are put online too soon – this is what has happened now with a French radio station.
Radio France Internationale (RFI) accidentally posted hundreds of obituaries of people still alive on Monday. The alleged deaths that were honored included British Queen Elizabeth II, Brazilian soccer legend Pele, and French actress Brigitte Bardot. The broadcaster apologized for the error and reported a technical problem.
“We are working hard to fix this major bug and we apologize to those affected and to you who follow and trust us,” the international radio station said on Twitter. The obituaries were prescribed by reporters in order to quickly react to an actual death, according to the broadcaster. This is a common practice with many media outlets. By evening the obituaries had disappeared from the site.
Posting the obituaries had led to numerous reactions on social media, from confusion to misunderstanding and ridicule. Personalities accidentally declared dead by RFI included former US President Jimmy Carter, American actor Clint Eastwood, Italian actress Sophia Loren, and Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Chamenei.
