A white shoe that belonged to Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) was auctioned this Sunday in Versailles, France, for 43,750 euros, auction house Osenat announced.

The shoe is in good condition. It measures 22.5 cm in length, corresponding to a size 36, in current standards. It is made of goatskin with silk on the toe, leather sole and 4.7 cm heel.

On the instep, it features a detail of four overlapping pleated tapes.

The shoes would arrive in the hands of Marie-Emilie Leschevin, friend of Madame Campan, the queen’s first servant, and would be kept for future generations.

In May, a chest from Marie Antoinette’s “suite” and a large towel used during her coronation in 1775 were auctioned for considerable sums, a sign of the fascination that this Austrian queen, who died in the guillotine after the French Revolution, exercises.
