During the Flash Memory Summit, the result of the association of Samsung and Xilinx, company purchased a few days ago by AMD. The result is a new computational storage unit (CSD) which includes an FPGA inside (Field Programmable Gate Array) produced by Xilinx who will be responsible for providing intelligence to the SSD for data processing.
This SSD with an FPGA inside received the name of Samsung SmartSSD, and thus becomes the first platform for adaptive computational storage industry, opening the door to another level of performance, customization and scalability to accelerate data-intensive applications. Although this heavy data usage is CPU-related now all this data processing power goes to the FPGA built into the SSDthereby reducing CPU usage and reducing data movement, latencies and eliminating performance bottlenecks. Data can also be compressed transparently to increase the apparent storage capacity of the SSD.
Advantages of computational storage:
- By increasing the speed by 2.8 times when executing SQL queries on the Parquet data of 1 CSD SmartSSD, the performance enjoys scalability by adding more drives.
- With 3 CSD SmartSSD, CPU usage is reduced by 87% while maintaining the same video transcoding frame rate
- 72Gbps throughput is achieved when it comes to LZ4 compressed data read rate and line rate decompression with 24x SmartSSD CSD on a single 2U server.
Moving huge amounts of data between storage and compute resources is inefficient. As data volume increases, computer CPUs become the system bottleneck, limiting processing power. Complex search queries can take hours, even days – a serious problem for businesses.
Computational storage drives solve this problem by bringing the computer closer to the storage medium. Data is processed directly into the SmartSSD CSD before it reaches the host CPU, avoiding large data transfers and accelerating comprehension times. Cost-effective scaling is easy: Processing power scales virtually linearly with storage capacity as more drives are added.
Xilinx indicates the potential applications that SmartSSD CSD is targeting:
-
Inference of artificial intelligence / machine learning
-

CSD unit Samsung SmartSSD they come in a standard size of 2.5 “ with the interface U.2 consuming Power 25 W. and offering storage capacities ranging from 3.84 up to 12 TB. The Xilinx Kintex UltraScale + integrated FPGA features more than one million system logic cells and nearly 2,000 digital signal processors (DSPs) for hardware acceleration.
As for SSD speed, the base model is supported by 4GB of SDRAM cache at 2400MB / s achieving sequential read and write speeds of patient 3500/3200 MB / s with 4K random read and write of 800,000 / 135,000 IOPS. If you want to know its availability and price, exactly, not a word.
