Last Sunday, a child, who attended the school of Floirac, died of meningitis at the university hospital of Bordeaux. Two other children in the same kindergarten class are currently hospitalized at the CHU, the Nouvelle Aquitaine regional health agency announced Thursday. After the tests, we know that they are also carriers of meningococcus B. “The health status of one of these children is developing favorably,” explains ARS in its press release.
One hundred people treated in advance
“To act quickly and prevent any new risk of contagion, ARS, in collaboration with the National Education, immediately drew up a list of contact subjects: about eighty children and twenty adults. On Monday evening, most of the contacts had started to seek treatment, ”ARS points out.
General practitioners and pharmacists of Floirac and neighboring municipalities were alerted to be able to answer questions from families and identify the typical symptoms of meningitis in their children (fever, severe headaches, more or less marked stiffness on the back of the neck, nausea and vomiting. In some cases, spots may appear all over the body.)
“It should be noted that the risks of contagion are exceptional, since meningococcus is a very fragile germ in the external environment”, specifies the ARS which will keep parents regularly informed.
