Hungary bought the ticket to the European Championship finals in the playoffs and will meet Germany among others. North Macedonia is for the first time, the curse of the Scottish Finals ends.
In Final A on Thursday (12 November 2020) Hungary were behind against Iceland until just before the end of the match and still won in a dramatic final round. Gylfi Sigurdsson (11th minute) gave Iceland the lead, but Loic Nego (88th) and Dominik Szoboszlai (90th + 2) turned the game over in Hungary’s favor.
Next summer, Hungary will take part in the European Championship finals for the fourth time. In Group F, Hungary will be the German side’s last opponent in the preliminary round on 23 June in Munich. Before that, the team around goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, who made a mistake when Sigurdsson conceded goals, has to do with reigning champions Portugal and world champions France.
The end of the Scottish curse
In the Playoff C final, Scotland beat Serbia 5-4 on penalties. First Kenny McLean converted the fifth penalty for Scotland, then Serbian Aleksandar Mitrovic failed on the fifth attempt. This also puts an end to the curse of the Scottish final: the last time you participated in the 1998 World Cup, you were always a spectator of major tournaments.
As a reward, duels with Croatia, the Czech Republic and bitter rivals England await at the finals of the European Championship.
Slovakia prevails over Northern Ireland
Slovakia also qualified for the final, for the second consecutive time. Slovaks with Bundesliga players Peter Pekarik (Hertha BSC) and Ondrej Duda (1. FC Köln) won 2: 1 (1: 1, 1: 0) after extra time in Northern Ireland and met Spain in the group E, Sweden and Poland. Juraj Kucka (17th) and Michal Duris (110th) secured the victory.
Premiere for North Macedonia
In the final of the playoffs D, North Macedonia, number 65 in the world rankings, won 1-0 (0-0) against Georgia on Thursday night in Tbilisi. Goran Pandev, 37, of the Italian first division of FC Genoa scored the winning goal (56th minute), which ensured for the first time the participation of the “Red Lions” in an important tournament.
Even before the match, coach Igor Angelowski said: “We are happy to be in the final, but we don’t intend to stop there.” Apparently his players had listened carefully, but the plan worked. At EURO (11 June to 11 July 2021), North Macedonia will play in Group C against the Netherlands, Ukraine and Austria.
A little less than a month ago, the two teams met in the C-League of the Nations League and split 1: 1 for the second time in the second duel. In the playoff semifinals, Georgia won 1-0 against Belarus and North Macedonia 2-1 against Kosovo.
