Google is planning to end one of the best features of Google Photos, starting June 1, 2021, any high quality photos you upload to the service will count towards the 15GB storage limit, where your documents are also saved, presentations and spreadsheets you create using Google Docs or upload to Google servers.
As soon as you exceed 15 Gb, you will have to subscribe to Google One, which costs from 2 euros per month for 100 GB.
Users who own a Google Pixel smartphone (which is not available in Portugal) will retain the ability to upload images without limitations even after June 1st.
In the context of the Google Photos service, “high-quality photos” are photos and videos that are automatically compressed by the service to take up less space. Users can also upload images and videos in their original quality, but if so they always count towards the 15GB limit. Since the launch of Google Photos in 2015, the ability to upload photos without limitations has always been one of the most interesting features of this service.
According to Google, this change will allow the company to keep pace with the growing demand for storage. To prepare users, the company will launch a new tool that will help service users manage photographs stored in the service. This tool will automatically choose blurry or dark photographs and suggest removing them to free up space.
The price of the subscription to the Google One service will not change and will continue to be 2 € per month for 100 GB.
