More than 19,000 people are currently awaiting kidney transplants in France. These chronic renal failure patients experienced the first peak of the Covid-19 epidemic with great concern because, from March 18 to May 11, health authorities in collaboration with erudite societies temporarily suspended kidney transplantation activity, a because of the risks that the operation could entail for the recipient but also for the donor of the transplant, in case of donation with a living donor.

Kidney transplants alone were no less important than the others, but the knowledge we had at the time about the Covid-19 virus and the risks it could pose for patients after a transplant operation were very limited, so we advised to limit the transplant operations to situations where it was a vital risk “explains Prof. François Kerbaul, director of tissue harvesting and transplantation organ at the Biomedicine Agency.
