This time, Honda’s fourth exit from Formula 1 in GP history was a shock. For weeks the question has haunted the Bulls with both teams: What will be in 2022?
No stop to development!
In the last Imola Grand Prix, Red Bull was unable to celebrate its 300th round of the World Championship after 63 wins and 180 podiums: double zero.
Even worse for the cops, however, was the clear announcement from Ferrari and Renault: from 2022 there will be no halt to the development of hybrid engines!
Mercedes would have agreed to quit because it is so advanced in technology! Well, after the other two engine manufacturers have vetoed twice, Red Bull can forget its ambitious project with Honda engines.
Sporting director Helmut Marko: “A development freeze would have been the absolute prerequisite for us to take over the Honda headquarters in England.”
The cops would not have been able to handle an engine battle alone, technically, personally and financially.
Threats mostly empty words
Now a future solution is gone – now what? Leave Formula 1 with Red Bull and Alpha Tauri or go back to the old Renault double bed, dirty with swear words?
The withdrawal from Formula 1 was threatened several times (as was Ferrari). After the divorce from Renault in 2018, there will be a second marriage with the French.
Motor alternatives? Mercedes will bring McLaren aboard in 2021, so it will have four teams – and Ferrari (three teams) should fear for their own supremacy!
Red Bull trembles for Max
Formula 1 cannot afford a bull exit. And if you go back to Renault and can’t take advantage of old successes with the French (four Vettel titles from 2010 to 2013), Max Verstappen (23) threatens to switch to Mercedes at the end of 2021.
The often dissatisfied Dutchman is to Red Bull what Lewis Hamilton (35) represents to the silver arrows: hectic life insurance. A certificate of guarantee for the world championships in the best car.
