iPhone 12 does not charge with all Qi devices

Apple has started selling the iPhone 12, and Pro Max and iPhone 12 Mini will be added this week – and the first difficulties with the new smartphones are assured.

Users on Reddit report that they sometimes struggle with wireless charging if they use a Qi charger that has also been able to charge the iPhone 11.

Of course there are differences here: not all Qi chargers cause problems, some work as well as expected. Unfortunately, devices that come from more or less well-known companies, such as Zen, Anker, Sophie or Nomad, also seem to be interested. It is not known why there are problems with these chargers.

Apple only allows charging with 7.5 watts via regular Qi chargers. With a Magsafe charger and 20-watt power supply, the iPhone 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max can be charged up to 15 watts. A maximum of 12 watts is only possible with the iPhone mini, presumably due to temperature issues.

Perhaps iOS 14.2 will help with these problems. The very long release notes also report a more reliable Qi charging feature. It is not possible to predict whether this will eliminate incompatibilities due to the still low level of distribution of the update.

Do you have an iPhone 12 and a Qi charger that won’t work reliably with them? So do other readers a favor and write the device name here in the comment lines below the article.
