While the Covid-19 pandemic has changed many habits, some of them should remain as they were or become even more intense, such as skin care. With the approach of summer, which begins on December 21, warnings multiply to avoid blemishes, allergies and acne. Also, this time around, what has become a new normal has imposed new rules with new consequences: the essential use of masks can increase sweating and even lead to acne.
The solution is not to stop using the mask, but to be careful, such as using moisturizers suitable for all skin types and washing the face with products that do not cause allergies. Experts also draw attention to sun exposure during quarantine: even indoors, the use of sunscreen may be necessary.
Dermatologist Alessandra Romiti says that, alone, the mask can already make the mouth region more stuffy and moist, contributing to the appearance of acne in those who are prone. In the summer, as the temperature rises, excessive sweating can worsen this condition.
– To avoid this, I recommend the use of moisturizers suitable for your skin type and wash the masks with neutral products, avoiding the use of softeners and rinsing well. You also need to pay attention to the material of the mask you are buying to minimize the risk of allergies – says the doctor, who, speaking of sunscreen, explains: – The orientation is to be used every time you expose yourself to the Sun. Depending on where you are inside the house, like a balcony or near the window, there may be sunshine and you need to use it.
Romiti, who is the coordinator of the Cosmiatry Department of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, adds that even in low sunlight, computer lights can stain your skin and protect yourself with sunscreen.
Keeping your face clean is the secret
To take care of your skin, regardless of the pandemic, the first step is to keep it clean. And this care needs to be doubled in the summer, when humidity and pollution intensify, explains dermatologist Aline Pinheiro.
– The face should be washed two or three times a day with specific soap for the type of skin: oily skin must use one with a greater degree of astringency, which cleans deeply; for dry skin, soap without detergent, which has soap-free lotion, because the soap dries even more – points out the doctor of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology: – It is necessary to remove the residues of makeup and product before going to sleep, because promotes the appearance of blackheads and pimples due to clogged pores.
Exposure to ultraviolet rays can also increase the risk of stains. Therefore, Aline states that it is necessary to avoid the use of acid-based products if you are exposed to the sun and to give preference to products with antioxidants to combat premature aging.
Expert tips
Soaps and moisturizers
– For oily skin, it is recommended to use a soap with a higher degree of astringency, which will carry out a deep cleansing of the skin
– Dry skin needs detergent-free soaps, which is a soap-free cleansing lotion, something that is already in the pharmacy
– A toner should also be used to help remove residues and impurities from the skin. For this the dermatologist Aline Pinheiro indicates the use of softer products: for oily skin, products in serum or gel; for dry and creamy lotions or creams
Solar filter
– Even in the pandemic, it is extremely necessary. If there is sun exposure, even inside the house, you need to spend
– If you go outdoors, use the filter in any area exposed to the sun, such as arms, lap, ears and legs, 30 minutes before exposure and reapplying every two hours
– Experts suggest to give preference to lighter filters, so that you do not have the feeling of oily skin
Be careful when using the mask
– With the use of the mask, there is a risk of acne appearing due to the tamponade of the skin, which is as if it is suffocating after a long period of use. The masks must be changed every two hours. The exchange time can be used to wash your face, which should be cleaned two or three times a day, especially if you sweat a lot
– Thermal water, micellar or tonic lotions are good options to restore the feeling of cleanliness and lightness before putting on the mask again
– It is also recommended to use light and soft moisturizers to avoid injuries caused by the mask, as the area can dry out after many hours of use
