Ariana Grande’s latest album “Positions” is an instant chart topper. With all the songs lined up one after the other on the music charts the night after the release, and the individual “positions” at number one, it’s clear she’s delivered.
But what sets this album apart from the others? Unlike “thanks u, next” and “Sweetener”, “Positions” is less for showing that Grande has found a new sound and more for her exploring the style she is already known for. “Positions” is not an album that evokes its past, but that heals from it.
The album starts with “shut up”, one of my favorites. From the start, Grande asks listeners to leave their opinions at the door and enter the album as if they were living in his world.
After “shut up”, “34 + 35” is a fun song made for you to sing! I found it true with many of the songs on his album. Grande’s ability to create songs that stick in your head only gets better with each album. “ugly” and “my hair” continue this narrative.
The first feature of the album is “motive” with Doja Cat, which drastically changes the mood of the album. “motive” is a lot more edgy than the other songs – think of something you would play with your best friends before going out at night.
All the features of this album stood out from the rest of his solo tracks. “off the table” with The Weeknd was so vulnerable, the first line was, “Will I ever love the same again?” What I liked about “off the table” in particular is how The Weeknd and Grande match so perfectly. Neither sacrifice their musical style for the song.
Grande’s latest album “Thank u, next” was released shortly after her breakup with Pete Davidson and the loss of her ex Mac Miller, echoing both her feelings of appreciation for her exes and her broken heart. “Positions” is more about progress and how Grande is about to leave those insecurities behind.
“obvious”, “six thirty” and “language of love” are some of the most beautiful and mature songs on the album. Grande sings about romanticizing falling in love, learning to love someone in new ways, and admitting that she is still learning what it means to love herself.
These songs remind me of the innocence of “Sweetener” and the powerful energy of “Dangerous Woman”. Grande is confident in her voice and I love the way she overlaps her voice and harmonizes with herself. It is one of the classic trademarks of his songs and certainly not lacking here!
“just like magic” is the big sister of “hit”, which was first featured on the album “Sweetener”. “Just like magic” means creating a life you love and it’s nice to hear that Grande is doing it for herself. After struggling so much with her mental health and relationships, the song reflects that Grande is growing up for herself and that she is so much more than her love life.
The album ends with “pov”, probably one of Grande’s best songs. This was the perfect song to end with in my opinion, as it envelops the little world that Grande created in “Positions” and mirrors the first song “shut up”.
One of my favorite lyrics from the album is “I’d like to see myself from your point of view”, which perfectly sums up the subject of this album. Grande is sharing how her past shaped her, but how she found a new power in living out of her head.
This album is definitely made for the mainstream – it’s super catchy and oozes sex. But the intimate layers that exist beneath the pop beats and high notes of Grande’s R&B (rhythm and blues) bring us closer to his life as it is now.
