In the devil’s experimental kitchen: Professor Boerne ends up in limbo in the new “crime scene” in Münster and is literally next to him. Are there really such near-death experiences? And how many times do fake doctors like the “crime scene” killer misbehave in reality?
If anyone asks about limbo: you can find it in an industrial estate in Münster directly behind a smeared fire door. “Limbus” is what the theologian calls this place of transition in the outermost circle of hell, and “Limbus” is also the name of the recent broadcast “Tatort”, which inspected Commissioner Thiel (Axel Prahl) and Professor Boerne (Jan Josef Liefers) a look into the afterlife. That limbo must be understood absolutely literally in this investigative farce that leaves the soil of the mundane. A bold approach, to which, however, he owes some of the most beautiful surreal scenes in the history of “Tatort”. In addition to a handful of questions …
What was it about?
About life and death and a transcendental place in between. After Professor Boerne had a serious car accident while being anesthetized with an insulin syringe, the medical examiner literally stood next to him. While his body is dying in the ICU, his mind is in “limbus”, where he meets an employee in the form of Inspector Thiel. Once again the professor escapes into reality, but is no longer noticed and therefore cannot share his knowledge of the murderous impostor (Hans Löw), who serves as a vacation replacement for Jens Jacoby’s Dr. Problems. To drive you crazy!
How often are fake doctors exposed?
Unfortunately, more often than you might think. Only in 2019 did the case of a 48-year-old scammer become known in Germany, who had worked for years as a medical assistant in a clinic near Kassel with forged certificates. Four patients died from incorrect anesthesia. According to an assessment by LKA Wiesbaden, at least twelve cases of unmasked impostors in the health sector have occurred since 2014 in the state of Hesse alone.
A large number of unreported cases at national level is assumed. Also because data protection and decentralized registration of approvals in 17 state medical associations reveal system weaknesses that white-coated pathological narcissists know how to exploit. “Germany makes things too easy for medical impostors,” complained Eugen Brysch of the German Patient Protection Foundation last year. “This is how people play with patients’ lives.”
The best known case of a false doctor is that of the alleged psychiatrist “Dr. med. Dr. phil. Clemens Bartholdy.” The wrong name and title were used between 1980 and 1997 by the postman Gert Postel, who even held a position as medical officer during his bogus medical career After his early release from prison in 2001, Postel published the nonfiction book “Doktorspiele – Confessions of an impostor”.
Are there really near-death experiences like Professor Boerne’s?
Autoscopy is the technical term for the truly irritating phenomenon of seeing oneself. Such out-of-body experiences are reported, for example, in clinically resuscitated deaths. Autoscopic perceptions could also be detected in relation to seizures and vascular brain damage. However, the research situation on the elusive topic is – as one might think – rather subtle.
Why was there a dead inspector at the “crime scene”?
Will the regular public forgive the Münster odds kings (reliably over ten million!) For the excursion into the transcendent? Or do you want the creators (book: Magnus Vattrod, director: Max Zähle) to go straight to the devil? One thing to consider, however, is that a final reunion with Thiel’s longtime partner, Nadeshda Krusenstern, would hardly have been possible on the solid ground of “Tatort” realism. The commissioner was murdered in the impromptu New Year’s Eve episode “The Team”. Actress Friederike Kempter wants more time for other projects after 17 years of “Tatort”.
Who is Commissioner Krusenstern’s successor?
In ‘Spieglein, Spieglein’ (2019), criminal investigation assistant Mirko Schrader appeared as a vacation replacement for Commissioner Krusenstern (Friederike Kempter skipped filming during parental leave). He did it so convincingly that it has now become a permanent position. “He makes the best coffee in the world, he’s surprisingly sporty and it didn’t fall on his head, let alone on his mouth,” says Axel Prahl, describing the new assistant. He is played by actor Björn Meyer (born 1989), a native of Lüdenscheid and a resident of Hamburg, for whom he is the most important television role to date.
What is the next step on the Münster “crime scene”?
With a corpse in the moat. He is in “Tatort: Long Live the King!” (Book: Benjamin Hessler, Director: Buket Alakus) discovered at the foot of a moated castle in Münsterland. Filming took place in June and July, it was WDR’s first “Tatort” production after the spring break linked to the Crown. “Everyone on the team is really motivated by the special circumstances to deliver the best quality detective story to the public at the end of the day,” assured WDR head of fiction Alexander Bickel. The broadcast date is already 13 December.
