Peru begins vaccination against 26 diseases and delivers vouchers for covid-19

Peru has launched a nationwide vaccination campaign to prevent up to 26 diseases following a diphtheria epidemic in Lima, while delivering family ties to address the economic crisis due to the advance of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a press conference, Deputy Minister of Public Health Luis Suárez explained that “if a child receives pentavalent (tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, hepatitis B and flu) and his booster doses, they are already protected, they have none need more “.

“Adults over 60 will be vaccinated against influenza and pneumococcus, and adolescents against cervical cancer,” added Suárez.

The campaign coincides with the diphtheria vaccination “trash” that has been placed in the districts of La Victoria and San Martín de Porres, after the deaths of two people affected by this disease in the last two weeks in those cities.

Diphtheria alarm denied

However, the deputy minister stressed that “there is no reason to generate a national alarm, nor is it necessary to have a specific day of diphtheria vaccination at this time”.

Suárez specified that “no additional cases to the family epidemic have been identified” linked to the first victim, a five-year-old girl who infected three relatives, and hoped that immunization of 7,000 people in her district contained the focus in that. jurisdiction from Lima.

The vaccination is aimed at any resident, Peruvian or foreign, who is within the population at risk and goes to immunization centers, the deputy minister said.

In parallel to the diphtheria epidemic, health centers continue to treat cases of covid-19, which have risen to 914,722 infections, of which 5,212 are hospitalized.

To date, 838,265 people have recovered from the disease and received medical discharges, while 34,720 have died from the coronavirus.

The President of Peru, Martín Vizcarra, instead highlighted the disbursement of the second Universal Family Bonus, of 760 soles (211 dollars), to 4.9 million families in the country affected by the economic crisis caused by quarantine and restriction measures due to pandemic.

Vizcarra, who on Monday will face a second request for impeachment from Congress, stressed that the Peruvian population is “fighting and strong” in crisis or emergency situations.
