Diphtheria alarm denied

However, the deputy minister stressed that “there is no reason to generate a national alarm, nor is it necessary to have a specific day of diphtheria vaccination at this time”.

Suárez specified that “no additional cases to the family epidemic have been identified” linked to the first victim, a five-year-old girl who infected three relatives, and hoped that immunization of 7,000 people in her district contained the focus in that. jurisdiction from Lima.

The vaccination is aimed at any resident, Peruvian or foreign, who is within the population at risk and goes to immunization centers, the deputy minister said.

In parallel to the diphtheria epidemic, health centers continue to treat cases of covid-19, which have risen to 914,722 infections, of which 5,212 are hospitalized.

To date, 838,265 people have recovered from the disease and received medical discharges, while 34,720 have died from the coronavirus.
