Nasal spray could prevent COVID-19 infections

A spray like this is still far from reaching the public. Human clinical trials would be needed, not to mention large-scale manufacturing to provide sufficient access. Scientists are planning to “rapidly advance” to further testing, Columbia said.

The move could bring protection to many parts of the world where COVID-19 mass vaccinations would be difficult. It could also serve as a “complement” even in places where vaccines are readily available, said key researchers Anne Moscona and Matteo Porotto. People who can’t get vaccines, or those for whom vaccinations don’t work, could spray themselves daily knowing they would be safe. This, in turn, could further limit the spread of the virus and hasten the end of the pandemic.
