The purpose of the campaign – which has been extended until November 27 – is reach 95% of the estimated audience of 160,000 children, aged between one and five years, in the federal capital. The vaccine is free and administered orally, through a “droplet”.

Nurse Fernanda Ledes, who works in the Immunization Technical Area at the Department of Health, explains that it is important for parents to bring their children so that vaccination coverage is expanded and there is no reintroduction of the disease into the country. .

“Although polio was eliminated from the Americas and the last case of DF occurred in 1987, we have low coverage. Therefore, there is no way to guarantee that the virus will not enter the country without the vaccine,” he said. a health professional.

How polio vaccine is offered in Brazil

Polio vaccine, a disease formerly called infantile paralysis, is offered in health centers throughout the year. Campaigns serve as a reinforcement.

According to the Ministry of Health’s National Immunization Program, each child must take at least three doses of the vaccine to be immunized:

• 1st dose at 2 months
• 2nd dose at 4 months
• 3rd dose at 6 months

There is a booster vaccine at 15 months. In this reinforcement two droplets are administered.
