Covid-19 is different for everyone. With mild corona courses there are at least seven different symptom groups, the researchers found.
- Coughing, loss of the sense of taste and smell, or shortness of breath are symptoms that can indicate a coronavirus infection. *
- In a new study, researchers at the Medical University of Vienna have given structure to the range of possible symptoms of the corona.
- Viennese scientists come to the conclusion: Slight Covid-19 courses can be viewed in seven different ways.
What are the typical symptoms of Covid-19? This question worries citizens and researchers around the world since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. It is now considered proven: the loss of smell and taste is an indication that you are infected with the coronavirus. A wide range of other ailments can be associated with the disease, but they don’t have to. There are rare cases where patients complain of severe abdominal pain or itchy wheals on the upper body. As a rule, however, medical professionals observe other symptoms. The Vienna researchers have now summarized in a study, What different forms of the disease are common with a mild course of Covid-19 – there are seven different possibilities according to the researchers.
Seven symptom groups corona with mild Covid-19 cycles
For their study, immunologist Winfried Pickl, allergist Rudolf Valenta and their team evaluated data from 109 patients with Covid-19 and compared them to a healthy control group. The patients were on the mend: they were not among the serious cases of Covid-19. According to the researchers, various tests have been able to show that various symptoms of Covid-19 are related and occur in the so-called symptom groups..
The following seven groups of corona symptoms were determined by the Viennese researchers:
- Flu-like symptoms (with fever, chills, fatigue and cough)
- Symptoms of a runny nose (with runny nose, sneezing, dry throat and stuffy nose)
- Joint and muscle pains
- Inflammation of the eyes and mucous membranes
- Lung problems (with pneumonia and shortness of breath)
- Gastrointestinal problems (with diarrhea, nausea and accompanied by headache)
- Loss of smell and taste
“In the latter group, we were also able to establish that more people with young immune systems are affected by the loss of smell and taste”, quotes the “Deutsche Welle”, the international broadcaster of the Federal Republic of Germany. , study head and immunologist Winfried Pickl. However, the age of the immune system is not measured by age, but by the number of immune cells, also called T lymphocytes, that have recently migrated from the thymus gland. “This means that we were able to clearly differentiate the forms of systemic course (e.g. group 1 and 3) from organ-specific forms (e.g. group 6 and 7) of the primary Covid-19 disease“, Pickl continues. However, according to the scientist, there may also be an overlap of symptoms.
However, Pickl’s doctors point out that it is possible to establish connections between the various symptom groups and the body’s defenses: If Covid-19 is accompanied by a high fever, this could indicate relatively long immunity, because the immunological memory is particularly activated. When patients complain of a loss of taste and smell, the body reacts with higher levels of T lymphocytes. The Viennese researchers see their study as an important contribution to vaccine development.
