“I let it be known that Warner Bros has asked me to step down from my role as Grindelwald in ‘Fantastic Beasts’, and that I have complied with and accepted that request,” the Hollywood star said in a statement on Instagram.
Actor Johnny Depp announced Friday 6-N that he has respected Warner Bros’ decision to withdraw him from the cast of the third episode of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, after losing a trial this week against British tabloid The Sun, which accused him of abuses his ex-wife Amber Heard.
“I let you know that Warner Bros asked me to give up my role as Grindelwald in ‘Fantastic Beasts’, and that I have complied with and accepted that request,” the Hollywood star said in a statement on Instagram.
The studio has confirmed to the media the actor’s withdrawal from the next film in the saga derived from the Harry Potter universe, which is scheduled to premiere in 2022.
The actor had participated in the first two episodes: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018).
London’s High Court on Monday ruled that Depp’s account of the alleged assaults published in 2018 was “substantially true,” a conclusion the actor said he wanted to appeal.
Depp, 57, filed a lawsuit against News Group Newspaper (NGN), owner of The Sun and its CEO, Dan Wootton, considering the article defamatory.
“The surreal judgment of the British court will not change my struggle to tell the truth,” the protagonist of such films as Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) said today.
“My determination remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this time,” added Depp, three-time Oscar nominee.
