Actor Michael J. Fox (59) hasn’t been seen in major Hollywood productions for a long time. The reason: He has had Parkinson’s since 1991. Parkinson’s is also known colloquially as tremor disease or tremor paralysis and is a slowly progressive loss of nerve cells.
The “Back to the Future” star is open about her fate and has now spoken about her recent health problems. In an interview with the American magazine “People” he said: “My short-term memory is over”. Fox also had to give up drawing and playing the guitar was no longer possible. “I keep writing and luckily I really enjoy it.” His fourth bio “No Time Like The Future” is expected to be released in the United States in mid-November.
“I went out of my mind”
He also talked about the darkest hours of his life. In 2018, a spinal tumor was removed in a risky operation. “I was threatened with paraplegia if I didn’t have an operation,” he says of the procedure. “You had to be very careful when removing it so as not to cause further damage.” The operation was successful. However, it took the actor four months of rehabilitation to learn to walk again.
But when he got back to normal, he fell badly in the kitchen and broke his arm in the process. “That was definitely my darkest moment,” Fox said. “I freaked out. I leaned against the wall in my kitchen, waited for the ambulance and got the feeling,” Well, it doesn’t get any deeper for me. “He questioned everything and didn’t see any positive outlook or solar side: “Only regret and Pain.”
Michael J. Fox is grateful for his family
But he used the recovery time afterward to go deep. In doing so, he realized: “Optimism is rooted in gratitude.” This helped him cope with the situation and see the things that enrich his life. Since then, he has focused on spending even more time with his wife Tracy Pollan (60) and their four children.
Due to his illness, Fox ended his career in Hollywood in 2000. However, he continued to be seen in television productions such as “Spin City”. He was nominated for an Emmy for his guest role on “The Good Wife”. He worked in production until 2016.
Her open approach to her illness has also encouraged other celebrities to no longer hide their suffering. Actress Selma Blair (48) made it public in 2019 that she suffers from multiple sclerosis. She said in an interview that Fox was a role model for her. (paf)
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disease that destroys cells in the part of the brain that controls movement. This destruction causes muscle stiffening, slower movements, tremors, insomnia and chronic fatigue, among other things. The disease affects the quality of life and can lead to severe disabilities.
Worldwide, there are approximately ten million people with Parkinson’s. There are more than 15,000 in Switzerland. The majority of the population diagnosed with Parkinson’s is over 60 years old. Men are affected slightly more often than women. Symptoms can be relieved, but disease progression cannot be slowed or stopped.
