Recognize the broad differences between urgency and emergency doctor allows Colombians to face everyday situations that many times, for various factors, the procedures are unknown, generating in some cases the inappropriate use of health service resources, or on the contrary, the complication of a patient for not having gone on time or properly to a professional who assesses the situation.
The Medical Emergency System (SEM) is an integrated general model, with the aim of responding in a timely manner to victims of illnesses or accidents that require emergency medical care. Despite this, In Colombia, emergency services are critical points for the quality of assistance to citizens.
That is why understanding the reasons for its use contributes to the improvement of systems. In many cases, emergency rooms have a high and increasing demand from users, since they usually do the reasons for which it was consulted are not relevant to being present.
By medical emergency we mean all those situations in which there is no immediate threat which could compromise the patient’s life, however, requires prompt intervention to improve it, reduce risks or avoid future complications.
“Urgencies and emergencies are different concepts, and this ignorance has led to problems such as: crowding, long waiting times that in some cases turn into poor service for users, excessive saturation of emergency services and increased cost of care; like many patients with complications due to late remissions, death at home, among others ”, emphasizes the doctor Miguel Angel Saavedra, Scientific Director of Santa Laura IPS.
On the other hand, when it comes to The medical emergency refers to all those situations in which the patient is at risk of immediate death, or has a high probability that your life is compromised, you need life support and your condition is critical.
In this sense, the national government defined with resolution no. 5596 of 24 December 2015 of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the technical criteria for the System of Selection and Classification of patients in the emergency services, known as “Triage”. This standard establishes a categorization to prioritize emergency room care from highest to lowest risk based on the patient’s clinical condition.
Now, the pandemic has put these two criteria back on the retina, emphasizing the importance of the meaning of each. First, because due to covid-19, many effects have made emergency care with respect to various institutions, generating that in many cases the overcrowding of emergency rooms it will force people to settle on the ground, which in various circumstances has complicated the treatment of medical emergencies that needed an adequate, effective and immediate review.
In this way, The distinction between these two concepts and their symptoms is a key point so that firstly people know when or not to go to a health center and, secondly, to decongestant emergency services. currently saturated by the pandemic, so that more patients can receive treatment in a timely manner.
“Some medical institutions, such as the IPS Santa Laura, to prevent the obstacles caused by the treatment of the virus, have set up first aid called ‘no covid’ in which the service is aimed at both children and adults, with the most modern equipment. technology, biosecurity protocols and specialized personnel for timely management and diagnosis, regardless of the complexity of the cases. All this to decongest emergency rooms more efficiently and assist patients without risk of contagion and reducing waiting times ”, adds Saavedra.
In Colombia, approximately only three out of 10 people consult on truly pressing issues, while the rest comes for situations that should have been resolved in other conditions.
