Huawei Matebook X is the latest laptop innovation in the Chinese company’s portfolio. I too had the opportunity to try it and the experience with him did not disappoint me. The ultrabook combines portability, given by its size and ingeniously applied design, with a rather capable configuration. Here is my opinion on this compact device.
Starting from the unboxing experience, we realize we are dealing with a premium notebook. The box is simple, white and adopts a minimalist look. When you open the lid, the laptop rises slightly and we find it below 65W charger, separately the cable and the Huawei Mate Dock 2 adapter, which allows us to access the VGA, HDMI and USB-A ports.
Construction and design
Huawei Matebook X weighs only 1 kg and measures 284.4 mm in length, 206.7 mm in width and 13.6 mm in thickness. It is therefore the thinnest and lightest laptop I have used so far. The case is made from a combination of magnesium and aluminum, I have not found a finer and more pleasant to touch alloy. Huawei has done a great job with the construction, the edges of the device blend perfectly and although it looks fragile and delicate when viewed from a distance, it feels solid and stable in use. At its base are two of the four speakers. At first I thought the holes were for cooling, but the laptop was passive cooling and is extremely quiet.
As for the display, the Chinese company has managed to integrate a 13-inch LTPS screen with an aspect ratio of 3: 2, 3000 × 2000 pixels, touchscreen and brightness of 400 nits, while maintaining a body-to-screen ratio of 90%. . In short, the display is impressive, no doubt the edges are thin, the colors are rendered exactly and it has good viewing angles. However, the 3: 2 aspect makes it more suitable for browsing the web, reading or accessing documents, rather than watching multimedia content.
Keyboard and trackpad
The keyboard is well spaced and illuminated in three steps, in a few minutes of use I was already used to it and typed at normal speed. No wonder, the keys have a 1.3mm travel and are based Scissor switch. The camera is also integrated into one of the keys, thus increasing security and is capable of 720p HD shooting. Although this mode of implementation has allowed to reduce the edges of the screen, the angle of view is a bit unusual. Personally, I didn’t care and can’t say it’s a bad sign, it’s just about everyone’s preferences. We also have a very fast fingerprint sensor.
We also have a generously sized touchpad, with tactile feedback, which allows us to press across its entire surface. However, I found myself in an unprecedented situation, ending up using the touchscreen more for navigation. After a few days I was wondering why more manufacturers don’t include touchscreens on notebooks. I found it very useful, especially for scrolling.
Special performance and features
Inside, the Matebook X houses a file Intel Core i5 1021U quad-core processor, 10th generation. The base frequency is 1.6 GHz, but it can go into turbo mode up to 4.2 GHz and adopts Intel UHD graphics as its graphics solution. We also have 16 GB of RAM and 500GB of storage via Samsung-branded SSD.
I tested it using CoreTemp, along with PCmark 10, and you can see the values obtained above. In short, the temperature is constant, between 50 and 70 ° C, but sometimes reaches 80-90 ° C. Since we are talking about a passive cooling system, these are good values, but you should expect the laptop to overheat in the back. The laptop doesn’t “flinch” when it comes to web browsing with 10 open tabs in Chrome, but it can’t be said to be made for games or programs that don’t require a lot of processing power.
Special features
Huawei has included a dedicated utility, PC Manager, which gives us updates for any driver (20 in total) and can detect problems with the device. Also from here we optimize the system and the function of the keys: we connect the Huawei phone to the laptop simply by touching the touchpad. Unfortunately, I didn’t have another device from the company on hand, but I leave you with the list of all supported phones, right here.
Autonomy
The notebook has a 42 Wh Li-Po battery. In addition to the modes already integrated into Windows: Battery, Better Performance and Best Performance, Huawei has optimized the software (Windows 10 Home) especially for this laptop, so it uses resources efficiently. I have about 6-7 hours of use, at 60% brightness, set to Best Performance mode in Windows. In principle, referring to the fact that we have a screen with a resolution of 3000 × 2000 and it is such a compact device, autonomy is great on the Matebook X.
Sound
I was pleasantly surprised with this. The device has 4 speakers, two of 2W on the back and two of 1W integrated into the keyboard of the device. We have clear sound and bass. We also look at the software Nahimic, through which we can modify the sound to our liking, depending on the current use. As for the microphones, there are two, ingeniously positioned, fixed in front of the notebook, for conferences and video calls.
connectivity
The laptop is so compact and slim, it only has two USB-C ports. Fortunately, we have the adapter Huawei Mate Dock 2 that saves us. I used the laptop connected via Bluetooth 5.0 to both wireless headphones and a portable speaker. We also have Wi-Fi 6 on board, the connection was stable and we didn’t encounter any problems.
conclusions
Huawei Matebook X it is a compact device, which adopts an ingenious design, studied by the company from all points of view. It’s fast, the footprint works perfectly, and the performance is decent. It’s not a laptop designed for play or “hard work”, but it excels in all other chapters. I can’t even classify the slight overheating as less, compared to the size, performance offered and the fact that it has passive cooling, that’s normal. Would I recommend it? Yes, for all ultrabook lovers, this, in my opinion, is among the best.
Price and availability
Given the premium experience and all the performance we get in a small package, the Huawei Matebook X has a price to match. It can be found in the following online stores:
