Congress participates in the November Blue campaign every year
In support of Blue November, an international awareness movement on the prevention and fight against prostate cancer, the National Congress Building will be lit in blue from 2 to 20 November.
The initiative aims to draw men’s attention to the importance of periodic tests for the early diagnosis of the disease.
Blue November was created in Australia in 2003, taking advantage of the celebration of World Prostate Cancer Day on November 17th. It was inspired by Pink October, which warns women about the importance of preventing breast cancer.
Prevention
According to the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU), prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, with a forecast of more than 65,000 new cases diagnosed in 2020.
Periodic annual exams are important because the disease usually shows no symptoms in its early stage, which means it is often only detected in the more advanced stages. If it is discovered and treated early, prostate cancer has about a 90% chance of cure.
SBU recommends that digital rectal examination be performed annually from the age of 50 for men with no cases in the family and from 45 years for blacks and men with cases in the family.
Pandemic
According to data from the National Cancer Institute (Inca), many new cases may not be diagnosed in time due to the social isolation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In Brazil, there was a 70% decline in cancer surgeries and a 50% to 90% drop in biopsies sent for analysis, it is estimated that between 50,000 and 90,000 Brazilians stopped receiving a cancer diagnosis during this period. .
