AMD reveals RDNA2’s performance in Ray-Tracing, comparing to RTX 3070

While during today’s presentation AMD did not discuss performance numbers when activating Ray-Tracing on its new RDNA2-based Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards, it later revealed its first results in the official DirectX Ray-Tracing benchmark on the his website. from Microsoft giving us an idea of ​​what to expect when activating DXR on these new graphics cards.

As we can see, AMD claims that one of its graphics reaches 471 FPS in Microsoft’s Ray-Tracing benchmark, although it doesn’t mention what its graphics are.

How does it compare to Nvidia graphics cards?

For comparison we ran the benchmark on an RTX 3070, which achieved 478 FPS. Also, according to Reddit users, an RTX 3080 gets 635 FPS and an RTX 3090 749 FPS, so this chart only reaches RTX 3070 and falls behind the RTX 3080.

Given that previous tests with AMD’s unmentioned RDNA2 graphics were done with the GPU that turned out to be the RX 6800 XT, it wouldn’t be surprising if these tests matched this chart as well. In that case, the Ray-Tracing activation of the RX 6800 XT would only be comparable to the RTX 3070 and the RTX 3080 would have 33% more performance, so the difference between AMD and Nvidia would still be a bit. If we add DLSS to this, Nvidia is still the option of choice for those interested in gaming with active Ray-Tracing.

Obviously these results don’t directly reflect the performance of AMD graphics in games, so we’ll have to wait a few weeks to find out. It is recommended to take them with tweezers, as they are just a first glance and not a definitive number.
