As a result of the increase in the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections and consequent Covid-19 diseases the number of deaths is also on the rise. Pathology figures show: Most of the victims die from Covid-19, not from their comorbidities.

Apparently wrong is the opinion, which appears repeatedly in the public and in the media, that most of the victims of the crown are among the people, who were seriously ill prior to their SARS-CoV-2 infection. Your expected mortality has been “pushed forward” by Covid-19.

“That’s not true. One Comorbidities (Concomitant disease; note) itself plays a minor role in limitations in function for the patient. But this is the case with all serious diseases, not just Covid-19, “Walter Hasibeder, the next president of the Austrian Society of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Medicine (ÖGARI), told APA on Wednesday.

Some previous diseases and especially age naturally increased the risk of a severe disease course. “But when Covid-19 patients die, it’s mostly from Covid-19, not previous illnesses,” the intensive care doctor explained. But be that Functionality, i.e. the ability to deal with daily life independently, is severely limited, the prognosis of those affected worsens.

“A previous disease as well as a well-regulated one hypertension oa Diabetes do not in themselves mean a reduction in performance, “said Hasibeder, department head of the Zams hospital in Tyrol. On the contrary, as the expert said:” Most of the patients admitted to our intensive care unit during the first pandemic stage suffered from tTypical diseases of civilization. Most of them were physically and mentally fit despite the middle age of 72. “

Ironically, the two youngest patients, aged between 30 and 40, would have developed the most severe lung failure and would have had to be connected to an ECMO device for artificial lung replacement.

Obviously there is an age curve in mortality from Covid-19. The dashboard of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) shows a mortality rate of 0.5 cases for men for the age group between 55 and 64 percent ill; for women this is still zero. Between 65 and 74 years of age, 4.5% of affected men and 1.7% of patients die.

Between 75 and 84 years of age, the Covid 19 mortality rate among males is 11%, among women almost half (6.4%). The 84+ age group has a Covid-19 mortality of 22.2% among men and 13.9% among women.

In Germany, pathologists evaluated 154 autopsies at 68 institutions: 86% of the Covid 19 victims examined had died directly from the viral disease. The Italian National Statistics Institute (Istat) came up with a similar study on 89 percent. Only 11% had died from another underlying condition with a SARS-CoV-2 infection.

A German registry of around 10,000 Covid 19 patients showed, however, that a significant percentage of those treated in hospital Pre-existing disease exposed: more than half (56 percent) hypertension.27 percent had Cardiac arrhythmia, 14 percent one chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and six percent Obesity.

“It all depends on the patient’s functional reserves,” Hasibeder said. And it has been reported from the United States that 20 percent of those who have been hospitalized or died from Covid-19 are young, that would not be a contradiction. “They were young but not healthy.“With obesity rates of 40 percent, this alone is a high risk.
