Polio vaccination will be strengthened with the drive trhu system on Wednesday (28) and Thursday (29) at four health posts in Curitiba. The idea is to increase the adherence of the population, which is much lower than expected, without the child having to get out of the car to receive the dose to avoid the risk of contagion from covid-19.

The vaccine has been applied since September 28 and only 29.5% of children aged 1 to 4 have been immunized. The goal is to immunize 90,000 children against infantile paralysis (poliomyelitis). The action takes place from 9:00 to 17:00 and it is sufficient to present the child’s vaccination card. The national vaccination campaign ends on Friday (30).

The four transit stations are located in the Portão, Cajuru, São Braz and Rebouças neighborhoods (check the addresses below). The vaccine is also available at other health centers in the city.

The director of the Epidemiology Center of the Municipal Health Department, Alcides Oliveira, warns that the low number of vaccinations is concerning, as polio can cause serious sequelae such as infantile paralysis. As of Tuesday (27), 25,709 doses have been applied. “It is not because we have not registered the disease for more than 31 years that we can overlook it. We already have the example of measles, which returned after 20 years. So we ask parents and guardians not to let the disease return to us ”, asks Oliveira.

Polio is a viral disease transmitted by contaminated food and water or by contact with an infected person. Some people with poliovirus do not get sick or show symptoms, in other cases the virus can affect the nerves and lead to partial or total paralysis.

The vaccine is the best form of prevention. The doses are in drops, without the need for a needle and syringe.

Measles and other diseases

19 types of vaccines are available in health units for pregnant women, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. Among them, BCG, which prevents tuberculosis and pentavalent, which fights diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis b and influenza B.

The municipal secretary of health, Márcia Huçulak, reiterates that families must protect themselves and issues a warning against measles. “We can have a measles epidemic or even an epidemic of other diseases, especially in children who are returning to circulation.

Measles is a disease that can cause sequelae and complications such as encephalitis and leave behind severe neurological sequelae. So we call our units, ”the secretary points out.
