Berlin (dpa / tmn) – After a month-long test phase, Samsung’s smartphone payment service has now officially started. Just like Apple Pay only works on iPhones, Samsung Pay only works on devices from the Korean manufacturer, but not all.
Samsung shows the following devices with German provider software version, Android version 9 or later, NFC short-range radio chip and biometric locking methods as compatible: The eighth generation Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series, Galaxy A6 (2018), Xcover Pro and Z series foldable display phones. Samsung Pay app must also be installed.
Rooted devices don’t work
The Galaxy J and M series models without NFC, on the other hand, are excluded from Samsung Pay, as are rooted phones, all Samsung tablets or the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S7, although these two models are equipped with a chip for l ‘Local NFC. Samsung has published the list of compatible smartphones in the support area of its website. Smartwatches are not currently supported.
Owners of an S6 or S7 could still resort to Google Pay because they meet the requirements for this service: i.e. an NFC-enabled phone from any manufacturer running Android version 5 or later that is not rooted.
However, like Apple Pay, Google Pay depends on partnering with banks. The ability to pay using these services also depends on the credit institution you are a customer of.
Compatible with any current account
Samsung Pay, on the other hand, claims that with the help of its partners Solarisbank and Visa, anyone with a German checking account can use the service. You can use up to three compatible Samsung devices with a Samsung Pay account.
In business, you pay with your smartphone by holding the unlocked device close to the payment terminal, just like you do with credit or tour cards, which also have an NFC chip for contactless payment. At least in Germany, there are generally no fees for contactless payments.
Short range NFC radio or QR codes
There are also some banks that run NFC short-range radio-based smartphone payment services with their own apps. And with Garmin Pay, there is an NFC payment service that not only works on the manufacturer’s smartwatches, but also on iPhones and Androids with the corresponding app.
In addition to NFC solutions, there are also many service providers or retail chains that implement smartphone payments by scanning QR codes at the checkout.
