As part of the second phase of vaccination against rabies, 66 points of sale will be opened next Saturday (31), from 8 to 17, to immunize dogs and cats in the Districts 5, 6 and 7 of Macei. In the first phase, which took place last Saturday (24), 14,131 cats and 29,823 dogs were immunized, for a total of 43,954 animals vaccinated on this day alone.
The rural phase began on Monday (26) and continues until Friday (30), when the maps will be closed and the animals vaccinated in this region will be counted. The vaccine is contraindicated only for animals under four months of age and very weak.
“We believe this first phase of the campaign is extremely positive. We expected to vaccinate around 35-40 thousand animals and vaccinate nearly four thousand more animals on Saturday than expected,” says Samy Barros, general coordinator of the Municipality’s Zoonoses Unit.
About the disease
Rabies is an infectious disease caused by a virus that multiplies in the central nervous system and travels to the salivary glands, with dogs and cats being the main hosts in the urban area.
The disease has a transmission period of two to three days before the onset of clinical symptoms in pets, which lasts throughout the course of the disease, with death occurring between five and seven days after symptomatic manifestation. There is no specific treatment for rabies, so vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the virus from reaching the population.
