Doing something uplifting and redeeming from such a depressing event as the 2000 Damilola Taylor murder takes some work. But Yinka Bokinni almost manages to handle it here as she remembers Damilola as a boisterous childhood friend rather than the symbol she has become. There’s also an interesting broader story: the killing was followed by the demolition of the North Peckham estate and the forced dispersal of the largely happy community that lived there.
