In the last year, following the announcement of ZIM in November 2017 on the first blockchain-based paperless scales pilot, ZIM and some of the major customers tested the new platform as a business solution for more navigation routes.
After the success of the pilot project, realized with the collaboration of Wave Ltd. and Sparx Logistics, ZIM has continued to evaluate the platform in different commercial lanes with more customers. Exploration transactions have indicated that blockchain technology can not only replace paper but also improve current activities based on e-mail, fax and other existing tools.
In two recent transactions, the original bills of lading were transferred to the receiver within two hours of Vessel's departure, a process that usually takes days or even weeks. All documentation processes, including approvals, transfers of ownership, etc., were performed on the blockchain-based platform. A shipment was sent from Vietnam to the east coast of the United States and a shipment of 11 special High-Cube containers was loaded in Koper and shipped to Haifa.
After successfully completing dozens of shipments with multiple freight forwarders and BCOs, ZIM is ready to begin the next phase by opening the opportunity to switch to eB / L to all ZIM customers in selected operations. In the first quarter of 2019, ZIM plans to focus on Asia-South Africa and North America-Mediterranean trades. These operations were chosen due to their different activities and the players involved.
Digitizing the shipping documentation process will have a huge effect of reducing time, complexity and costs for all parties involved.
ZIM is leading the digitization efforts and has begun to engage other industry stakeholders to exchange knowledge and create industry standards.
Eyal Ben-Amram, ZIM CIO: "Having gained considerable experience with this revolutionary technology, we are now moving forward, part of our commitment to maximize digitization, while at the same time improving our levels of customer service and nurturing relationships. with customers ".
