1440p resolution may soon become the industry standard for gaming laptops. Eluktronics is the first company to offer a notebook of this type that integrates a screen with 2K resolution and a refresh rate of 165Hz.
In 2020 we saw some premium models with 4K displays, be they OLED or LCD. This was a huge step up from the full HD resolution that has since become the standard for laptops. However, the integrated 4K screens on notebooks raise the price of the products a bit.
According to Youtuber Dave Lee, however, 2K screens are about to make a comeback as the new standard for gaming laptops. Apparently, laptop manufacturers have chosen to “ignore” 2K resolution, going from 1080p, straight to 4K. However, this doesn’t make much sense on rather small notebook screens. In addition to the high price, both the autonomy and the performance decrease a bit.
Additionally, some manufacturers offer displays with refresh rates up to 300Hz, but these are Full-HD only. By contrast, 2K and 4K resolution screens have so far only had 60Hz refresh rates.
Eluktronics is the first company to offer 2K screens clocked at 165Hz
Eluktronics is the first manufacturer to launch notebooks that integrate 1440p (2K) screens with refresh rates of 165Hz. The new displays are manufactured by BOE and the manufacturing costs are only $ 50 higher than the Full HD versions. Below we have a clip of the famous Youtuber Dave Lee, who tested the new Eluktronics model.
The screens are also quite bright, offering 318 nits, but obviously don’t offer HDR support yet. What’s more, in addition to the higher refresh rate, they also have a response time of just 2.5ms, making them perfect for competitive gaming. Plus, for the $ 50 in addition to full-HD screens, it received 100% sRGB coverage and 87% Adobe RGB gamut.
However, gaming laptops with such a screen require quite powerful graphics solutions. If we look at the new Eluktronics models, we see that all models have Super Mobile graphics cards from nVidia. However, this problem could be solved in 2021, when we should see AMD’s RTX 3000 and RX 6000 mobile series of GPUs.
Another problematic issue would be scaling to Full HD resolution. Apparently, if we force the switch to 1080p resolution, the image becomes blurry and lacking in detail, even more so than if it were running natively on a full-HD screen. Of course, we also have a decrease in autonomy here, but not as drastic as in the case of a 4K resolution screen.
At the CES 2021 tech show in January, we should see more models announced by other manufacturers. You can see variants based on AMD. Additionally, the launch of the new Ampere and RDNA2 GPUs should lower prices for the 2070 cards. So we may see cheaper notebooks with 2K screens.
