THE QUESTION. Bats, pangolins, snakes, cats, minks and now dogs too. Since the coronavirus emerged in China in December 2019, several animals have been accused of being asymptomatic “intermediate hosts” or carriers of a virus mutation, as was the case with mink in Denmark.
Now it’s the dogs’ turn to be seen as “reservoirs” for the coronavirus. Published in the journal Environmental Research, a Spanish study questioned 2,086 people about their daily lives while in prison in Spain between March and May 2020, in order to define behaviors that would amplify the risk of being infected with Covid-19. Researchers have determined that owning a dog increases the chances of being infected with the coronavirus by 78%. But can dogs really infect humans? Is there a potential for disease transmission through these pets?
